Why circular?
Circular tourism is in the logic of the circular economy, a business model consistent with the principles of sustainable development.
The so-called economic “circular” want to create a virtuous circle that produces goods and services without wasting the limited resources of the planet that are the raw materials, water and energy.
In the same way, tourism “circular” proposes a model in which each actor of tourism (traveler, host, tour operator, supplier) adopt an eco-friendly approach.
A virtuous circle
Opting for the circular tourism allows travelers to take a responsible approach at all stages of their stay, the preparation of the trip to the local experience.
This tourist offer in fact establishes the following virtuous circle:
- Proposal of a sustainable tourism offer from industry professionals
- Choices, planning and booking a stay in a sustainable way
- Choice of a soft transport to reach its destination
- Responsible living by the selected institutions, local consumption and adopted eco-actions (waste sorting for example …)
- Feedback between tourists and / or professionals to enhance sustainable tourism offer (back to step 1).
The Strengths
The circular tourism meets the expectations of European travelers because:
- 9 out of 10 Europeans say they are attentive to the environmental impact of their travel
- 60% of European customers perceive the sustainability of a living as a plus, equal delivery
- 10% of European customers consider sustainability as an essential criterion.
Currently, 17% of tourist establishments engage in environmentally. However, this sector is expected to grow to meet current and future environmental challenges.
By enrolling in the context of sustainable development, tourism “circular” can reconcile tourism and sustainable resource management.
Its objective is to produce goods and tourist services while greatly limiting the impact on the environment (including the consumption and waste of non-renewable energy sources).

Thank you for this clear explanation. I’m currently doing my thesis on circular accommodations (in the tourism industry), and this website is very informative.
